Omagugu Makhathini Presents ‘Chakula Cha Roho’
As we delve deeper into this month dedicated to celebrating women, one of the many songstresses who has given tirelessly to jazz returns to The Orbit to present Chakula Cha Roho.
‘Chakula Cha Roho’ means ‘food for the soul’ and, with this KiSwahili phrase, Omagugu Makhathini calls on the memory of her dear mother to feed our souls. Makhathini’s mother was born on what South Africa now knows as women’s day – 9 August.
It is thus fitting that Omagugu dedicates her performance on Saturday, 12 August to her mother and all women. In invoking her mother’s spirit, Omagugu seeks to transport the audience on a jorney of love, freedom, and through some older and new compositions.
Omagugu Makhathini – vocals
Nduduzo Makhathini – piano & rhodes
