Igugu is a young project formed by Thembelihle Dunjana, which is homage to the place which she was bred, Gugulethu. It is a sonic experience which speaks to the social issues such as race, inequality, gender, crime, and identity faced by the youth of the nineties in Cape Town as well as other parts of South Africa.
The sound is an influence of old school soul, SA jazz, house and kwaito which have been fused to create an authentic sound which speaks to the movements of our people within the townships and various places of South Africa which is heard through the different rhythms and different percussion instruments in the music.
The band setup is that of a jazz quintet with added vocals from Lihle.
There are many stories to be told. Igugu brings the taste of home through some stories told under the influence of many South African jazz legends.
